At Engage, I am responsible for communication. The aim of this mission is to continuously update the network about Engage’s activity and develop a communication strategy in order to satisfy audience’s interests. For this reason, I developed a study for determining the thematics that interest the most Engage’s audience. To do so, I took into consideration the number of “likes” and posts I shared on each thematic on Twitter and on the thematics of the three newsletters (called Action Letters) I wrote based on the numbers of openings and clicks on it (Fig. 1). The results will determine the subjects of the following events organised by Engage. Figure 1: The thematics and the indexes taken into consideration on Twitter and on the Action Letter for the determination of the subjects of the next events organised by Engage.

In the frame of my internship at Engage, I’m responsible for writing the Newsletter (called Action Letter). The Action Letter is sent every 3-4 weeks, depending on the events that Engage is preparing. The aim of the Action Letter is to update all the Engage network about what Engage is actually working on and how it is developing projects and communicates around futur events. Every Action Letter has a principal theme (ex. The future, the living…). It is composed of some permanent parts that are always presents in all the Action Letters and variable parts that change every month. The permanent part is composed of a presentation of the Engage University and of the specific programs (see my first blogpost), an interview of a stakeholder, a post of Visionary and Engage Aime. For the interviews of the stakeholders I normally have to find a researcher, teacher or expert of the subject we want to treat in the Action Letter. Engage has a wide network of stakeholders where I can choose one for the interview or I can contact external researchers and ask them 5-6 questions concerning their work. For this, I have to do a bibliography research of the speakers before meeting them in order to be able to know what they are working on and ask questions on his range of knowledge. Concerning the Visionary, it is a section I create on the Instagram’s page of Engage. Everyday, I share a post where a put an information concerning a topic that I choose (political, environnemental, society, science…). For the Action Letter I add a Visonary referred to the theme of the Action Letter. An example of a Visionary [1]. Concerning the Engage Aime, is a section of the Action Letter where I publish some interesting events, books, expositions, restaurants that are itinerant with the topic of the Action Letter. En example of "Engage Aime" from the mars Action letter. Concerning the non permanent part of the Action Letter, I am used to write some paragraphs on the events that Engage is organising, publish articles on Engage’s action and create visuals, infographics, etc. A visual I created for an event organised my Engage using Canva [2]. Sometimes, I also share some information concerning events organised by partners of Engage and so they do on their Newsletter concerning our events.
Here you have the links for the two Actions Letters I wrote, the second one has been sent yesterday ! Enjoy ! Before starting my internship I clearly underestimated the role of social media in the working field and the impact they can have on business, social and personal decisions. As you certainly know, every society and association MUST have a page on the most popular social media : Twitter and Facebook. Social media, are indeed the most direct way to interact with general audience and sensitize and gain the support of people that aren’t in their network yet. Social media strengthen the media impact of organizations, but they can do more than that. They can bring in new customers or clients and help you better serve your current customers. They also allow you to communicate with your audience quickly and easily. Here are some tips for writing impacts posts [1] :
The impact of the social media involves various sectors including scientific research. Social media can be used to share informations about your work and the progression of it (as we did with Tamara during the Biosensors month). There are more and more labs that share their informations on social media (of course when their content is not private) and this allows them to communicate more easly with others labs that are studying the same subjects. During my internship I had the opportunity to exchange with Lucas Delattre, who is responsible of communication at IFM (Institut Français de la Mode), and he told me that a little lab in North Carolina has done a partnership with l’Oréal thanks to a single tweet. There is a great number of examples of partnerships, businesses or exchanges that were born thanks to social media. Some numbers for making you understand to what extent social media can impact a society’s business :
I hope I gave you another face of the social media than the one we personal use in our live. If you want to know more about this subject, I suggest you to read “The zen of social media marketing” by Shama Kabani. First of all, What are the Engage days? Engage, the society where I’m currently doing my internship, organizes every 6 months an event that extends on 4 days called Engage Days. For this event, a topic is chosen and many stakeholders of the field come to speek in conferences, make ateliers and games to let people participate and learn more about the topic. During the last Engage Days, the topic was the living. Since this topic is very wide, there were many different stakeholders talking about biology, biotechnology, biomimicry, alimentation, ethics… What was my work at the Engage Days? As I already said in my first blogpost, at Engage I’m responsible for the communication. Before the event I had to communicate via email, facebook and twitter about the event. The objective was to raise visibility on the event and involve the largest number of people. Then, I created a page on Weezevent [2], a software where all the participants had to sign in to let Engage know when they would arrive and how much time they'd stay at the Engage Days. I also created the visual of the event (Image 1). This was necessary for the organisation since 80 persons were attending the event. Moreover, I had to contact the stakeholders to invite them to the event and also ask them a preview of their presentation to make sure their intervention was itinerant with the subject of the days. Image 1 : The visuel I created for the Engage Days presenting some of the speackers of the event. During the event I had the opportunity to follow all the conferences and take notes for making a report to send to all the participants. I was also charged to regularly share moments of the event on social medias. Image 2 : An example of tweet during the Engage Days. In this picture, Brigitte Gothière, director of L214. But the biggest part of my work consisted in the redaction of the report for the participants. For the report I had to do some infographic slides and select the most important notions about the conferences for all the 8 speakers at the Engage Days. For doing the infographics and the visual of the event I used a softwear called Canva [3]. This softwear allows me to do a lot of visuals and is free. What did we talk about during the Engage Days? During these conferences we treated the theme of the living starting from the questions : what is the living? How could we modificate it? Vincent Schachter, tried to answer these questions but as we already learned during the first year at FDV, there isn’t an accorded answer between the scientists concerning the question. There are many characteristics that an organism should have to be considered a living organism. For example it should be able to interact with it's environment and be able to reproduce itself. [4] Concerning the second question, many stakeholders treat the thematic of OGMs, such as Pierre-Henri Gouyon and Jacques Caplat, enriching our knowledge on the subject and presenting different points of view. [5] Image 3 : An infographic I created for the final report of the Engage Days based on Pierre-Henri Gouyon's presentation. [6] But we didn’t only discuss about biology, but also about ethics. Between the stakeholders there was Brigitte Gothière, director of L214 [7], an association that fights for animal protection and for the closure of slaughterhouses. Also, Karine Jacquemart, director of Foodwatch France [8], a political organization that defends consumers rights, claiming for a transparent market, where consumers are free to decide what to eat, with full knowledge of the origin of the product they choose. Image 4 : An infographic I created for the final report of the Engage Days based on Brigitte Gothière's presentation. The Engage Days have been a really interesting experience for me; I learned a lot about such a wide range of topics that passionate me on the theme of the living. Moreover, I had the opportunity to exchange ideas with all the speakers and discover many different points on the same subject. If you want to know more about OGMs, I suggest you a very interesting documentary made by Arte with Pierre-Henri Gouyon, speaker at Engage : https://rutube.ru/video/b1ad819173bf6ed685cf1abe8300890f/ If you want to know more about L214’s activity : last week they released informations concerning a health scandal in a breton pig livestock :http://www.lemonde.fr/planete/article/2017/03/16/scandale-sanitaire-dans-un-elevage-breton-de-cochons_5095235_3244.html References :

As some of you already know, in the next six months I will be doing an internship at Engage, a society that is part of the CRI and was founded 2 years ago now. Engage's mission is to involve civil society in an economic, environmental and societal transition. The meaning of “transition” is to skip from a passive status ( ex. be conscious of all the environmental issues) and pass to an active status (move to action and make a change). To this end, Engage has been structured around three axes : - Engage Network, that inspires community around media and creative events giving information on current issues. - Engage University, that allows everyone to acquire the knowledge and skills to become an actor of the changement. For this purpose, Engage offers courses on 5 main themes: geopolitics, environment, technology, new governance and ethics. The stakeholders at Engage University are experts in these themes, such as Gilles Babinet, a member of the European Commission and a digital expert, or Pierre Henri Gouyon, a researcher at the Museum of Natural History in Paris and an expert on biodiversity and many others. - Engage Action, that enables everyone to contribute to projects with a strong social and environmental impact. The five themes of Engage. Source : http://engage.world/programme-transitions Today, Engage brings together a multidisciplinary community of 4,000 active members. Its innovation is given by the different profiles of participants as well as stakeholders (differences in field of work, country and age). It has accelerated or developed more than 10 projects, including Engage With Refugees, whose ambition is to facilitate the social and professional integration of refugees. In this very motivating framework, I am responsible for communication. In the Engage team I am the only one in charge of this mission, for this reason I have quite a lot of tasks to accomplish: writing the Engage Newsletter that is sent once a month to the participants, keeping update the database and social networks, interview Engage University’s stakeholders (researchers, diplomats, artists, etc.) and then write articles about their work, organize events (contact speakers, organize conferences ...) and many other missions. Engage, since it is a small society, allows me to accomplish many tasks alone, reason why I have the opportunity to develop my skills and my creativity always following the codes set by Engage by giving to my work a concrete and useful sense. The open mind of Engage allows me to express myself during the several meetings by proposing my ideas and developing my projects (itinerants, of course, to Engage's themes). I had the opportunity to develope a page on Twitter where everyday I publish informations and articles about actual issues ( mostly environmentals ). The aim of it is to give rapid and essentials information to the audience in order to be able to be aware about current issues and take action. Moreover, Engage regularly organizes conferences on topics that interest me (ecology, biodiversity, biomimetics ...) and I have the opportunity to attend them free of charge and enrich my personal culture. I hope to have given you a general framework on my work at Engage. If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment. |
